Applied Behavior Analysis services are available through Life Connections for children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. Through ABA services at Life Connections, each individual’s services will be tailored to acheive maximum success. Our ABA professionals are trained and certified to provide ABA services as BCBAs (Board Certified Behavior Analysts) and RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians).

ABA is an evidence-based treatment designed to help children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder to learn, increase communication skills, improve attention and focus, improve social skills, and decrease problem behaviors.

What is ABA Therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been proven to improve the quality of life for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General, ABA therapy focuses on human behavior and is able to increase positive behaviors and minimize challenging behaviors.
How will ABA therapy help my child?

ABA therapy will address the developmental delays identified during an initial assessment of your child’s functioning across areas of concern. With children on the autism spectrum, this often includes areas of verbal communication, like the ability to converse with parents and peers, request items, and communicate emotions and needs. Nonverbal communication, like making gestures and understanding social cues, are also included.

Other important target areas of ABA include social skills, play skills, potty training, self-care skills (brushing teeth, washing hands, etc.), and day-to-day living skills (getting dressed, table manners, etc.).

Does ABA therapy work for Autism?
 ABA treatment is the gold standard therapy for increasing life-long skills for individuals with Autism. There are more than 30 years of research demonstrating the effectiveness of ABA treatment in increasing positive behaviors and life-long improved functioning.
When is the best time for my child to begin ABA therapy?

Simply stated: the earlier, the better.

Plenty of clinical research has demonstrated that children who start ABA therapy as early as possible (~2 years old) make the most significant improvements in their areas of concern. In fact, children who received early intensive ABA therapy have often progressed to the point of being virtually indistinguishable from their neurotypical peers.

Does my child have to have a formal autism diagnosis to get treatment?
The state of Iowa requires a medical diagnosis of autism made by a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Developmental Pediatrician or Pediatric Neurologist in order to have ABA paid for through public or private health insurance. A copy of the diagnostic report is required to accompany the request for treatment.
How long does it take to get treatment started?

Once the Intake documents are completed and we have copies of insurance cards and a copy of the diagnostic report, we submit a request to complete an assessment to your insurance. When the assessment is authorized, the Behavior Analyst will schedule 1.5-2 hours with you and your child to complete the assessment. The Behavior Analyst will then write a treatment plan and submit that to your insurance for approval to start treatment. The whole process can take 6-8 weeks depending upon scheduling and how quickly the insurance company responds.
