About Rochean Wright, LMSW

Here is a little about me. I am a native of Philadelphia PA. I have been living here in Des Moines since July 2009. After coming to Des Moines, I obtained an Associates Degree from DMACC in December 2010; I obtained a Bachelor’s in Human Services with a minor in 64’ Sociology from Grand View University in April 2013; I obtained my MSW from the University of Iowa in May 2018. And, I was licensed as a therapist in February 2019.

I completed my field learning at Creative Visions where my focus was mentoring youths who struggled in school as well as those community members seeking assistance with basic food needs, utility assistance and programming resources. In addition, I also worked with the elderly and aging as well as individuals with physical and mental limitations. I worked in West Des Moines, Indianola and Knoxville School systems offering opportunities for me to work with youths who have challenges with education and the law as well as working with families challenged with loving these troubled youths and mentally challenged adults. I have worked with persons as young as 6 y/o and as seasoned as 82 y/o.

Since graduating from U of I, I have served on the BOD for the ACLU of Iowa for two years. I worked closely with grassroot organizations like Make It Work, CCI Action Fund and Progress Iowa. I worked in the nursing home as a geriatric therapist; I worked as a full time therapist for Broadlawns Medical Center via the Urban Dreams location. I worked as a case manager for Unity Point while serving as a therapist for troubled youths.

Why did I become a social worker? The road to being here was ordained by God. He really had His whole hand in my life. I spent so much time running trying to understand my pain. You see I understand struggle, hurt, disappointment and grief. I also know all that it takes to keep your head up when all you want to do is waddle in your own sorrow. Newsflash – it is okay to feel sad so long as your sadness does not keep you from ever experiencing joy… I like to say, “How will you ever appreciate the sunshine, if you cannot stand the rain.”
